GO BIG RED!!!  This will be screamed by thousands of people this Saturday, as they watch the first Husker football game of the season.  Farmer Brown will be among them I’m sure!  But the Huskers are not the only thing red in our family.  We bleed red, but we also drive red.  Yes, that’s right were one of those people that love Case IH equipment.  Actually, for me I think it was stated in our wedding vows, not sure, will have to check the tape again.  And for the little Browns, they were just born that way, I swear!

Not only is it football season, but it will soon be harvest season, and Big Betty Lou (the combine) is getting ready for her big day too!  She is getting looked over to make sure everything is in working order for the first day of harvest, an extremely exciting time around here-it’s when we get paid back for all the work in the previous months. ( Do you know how many working parts are in one combine?  I don’t know either but it is a lot!)

But while Farmer Brown is busy harvesting his corn and soybeans, I’m working hard harvesting what is left in the garden, mostly tomatoes and pumpkin right now.  So while most people yell go big red for the football team, Farmer Brown yells Go Big Red to Big Betty Lou, and I cheer for my red tomatoes quickly turning into something delicious.  We all have our team, and our thing (even if football isn’t my “thing”).  I promise I will check in on the games now and then to see how our team is doing, I think it is a law that I have to. So here is my obligatory message…GO BIG RED!!!

Where is my Ruth Bader Ginsburg?

Where is my Ruth Bader Ginsburg? Warning : Politics and religion will be discussed, if this will offend you, please stop reading now.  If you are still with me, grab a cup of coffee and let’s go. I don’t know about you, but I really do not like this presidential campaign.  There are very few candidates that I like, depending on the poll that you look at, I don’t like the top three.  Social media has been on fire with this lately, of course, with people campaigning for their favorite candidate and their ideas to save the world. And this is perfectly fine, even though I strongly disagree with most of them. The world to me seems so divisive, and angry.  Even though I’m a news junkie I occasionally think about living in a cave until November.  But this is not an option.  I was really feeling down, when I heard the news of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s death, and the fight over his vacant seat didn’t help.   I almost got lost ...

Being a Mom in a new war

In January of 2003, I was a 22-year-old college student who was looking forward to my last semester at college.  I had my plans lined up, and goals worked out.  But I got a call that changed my life forever! Oh! I was in the Army Reserve also; did I forget to mention that? Yes, so I got a call that said you have 24 hours to report to the reserve center with all your Army things and whatever else you think you might need for an indeterminate amount of time. What?  I cried all the way home, grieving the life I was leaving behind, having no idea if I would ever return or how life would be, if I returned. I dutifully packed my things and reported like a good soldier, and began my journey to Iraq.  A journey that would end up being a year and a half before returning home.  Life looked a lot different when I returned. A lot of my family and friends seemed very much the same, but I felt very different.  I was looking at life through a different lens, a lens s...

A Letter to the Soldier on my Memorial Bracelet

During Memorial Day weekend and the days around Veteran’s Day, I wear a memorial bracelet of a soldier who died in Iraq. The research that I have found shows this soldier was killed in the same area I was in Iraq at the time, it is also possible, although I’ll never know for sure that I shared his honor flight out of Iraq with him. The honor flight is a soldier's flight home after dying in a war zone. This flight was the first of possibly many to get their body home to their family. The image of this covered deceased soldier flying on the same flight I was on troubled me for a long time, so I did research to try and find out who this person might have been. I found the name of a person killed in the area I would have been in on that day, I will never know for sure if this soldier is for sure the one I shared a flight with, but no matter what, I will honor him just the same. Following is a letter I wish I could send to heaven to let him know I remember him, and assuming I shared a f...
